Our Program
Great Plains Healthy Start has been serving families of the Great Plains Region since 1992. As one of the original 15 Healthy Start programs in the nation funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Great Plains Healthy Start is proud to continue this tradition of supporting American Indian families to ensure every child gets the chance they deserve to have a “healthy start” in life.
Today, there are 100 Healthy Stat programs across the country sharing two common goals: “Improve women’s health before, during and after pregnancy” and “Help families care for their infants through their first 18 months so they are healthy and ready to learn.”
Great Plains Healthy Start is a community based program utilizing paraprofessional Community Health Workers to deliver a variety of services to women and childbearing age, their partners, and children from birth to 18 months. The services that we provide are free and the only eligibility requirements are that you reside in one of (7) Healthy Start communities in North and South Dakota.
Program Approaches – Healthy Start has 4 overreaching approaches
- Improving women’s health,
- Improving family health and wellness,
- Promoting systems change, and
- Assuring impact and effectiveness through workforce development, data collection, quality improvement, performance monitoring, and evaluation.
